New multimedia educational material published for public speaking

Retirement speeches, graduation speeches, best man speeches or maid of honor speeches and have one thing in common; being an engaging speaker requires more than good content.

Social gatherings aside, writing a persuasive business message is just part of winning the business.  At some point in time, somebody's going to have to get on their hind legs and 'pitch for the business' and this requires much more than subject expertise.

The confidence exuded by the speaker who appears comfortable on stage represents the apogee of performance for many people required to speak regularly at business events or social occasions.

Good educational materials on cimmunication skills are hard to come by and Active Presence is proud to announce the recent publication of its new multmedia product, Successful Speaking Secrets (volume two), offering a new and unique approach to accessing the techniques underpinning exceptional presentations and public speaking performances.
Until now there has been a lack of really accessible, multimedia material addressing this critical area of personal and professional development.

The Successful Speaking Secrets box set contains an integrated self-development programme, comprising printed, video and audio resources, designed to maximise the effectiveness and flexibility of the learning experience.  It is the only material that delivers its messages in all three formats (written, video and audio), making it ideally suited to all three learning styles, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.

With Successful Speaking Secrets you will discover:

  • How to control your nerves and increase your confidence
  • How to produce and use notes effectvely
  • How to use powerful language that connects with your audeince's emotions
  • The secrets to producing high-impact scripts
  • Techniques to help you improve your memory
  • How to plan eye-contact to maximum advantage
  • The secrets to varying your voice to achieve greatest impact

To find out more about Successful Speaking Secrets, click here. The unique approach taken by Successful Speaking Secrets can be summarised as a fusion of biology, physics and creativity:

Biology
Good speakers are heard by their audiences.  Successful Speaking Secrets provides an explanation as to why breathing and posture are critical to an engaging performance, as well a providing a series of exercises demonstrating appropriate technique.

Physics
Good speakers can be understood.  At its simplest, speech is simply vibrating air molecules.  Many people are let down by poor articulation, producing unstable speech that audiences find hard to understand.  Successful Speaking Secrets provides exercises to improve articulation.

Creativity
Even speakers who can be heard, understood and know their topic can still bore an audience to distraction.  This occurs when they haven’t thought through an appropriate structure and when they use language which doesn’t speak to audience’s needs.  Successful Speaking Secrets explains the rules for writing engaging scripts and provides techniques for producing powerful language that engages audience’s emotions.

Successful Speaking Secrets volume two is designed for people who give lots of presentations, either socially, or as part of their job.  It's about engaging the audiences emotions and delivering persuasive performances that boost professional and personal credibility.  It comprises two workbooks, with over 120 pages of information, approximately two hours of video divided over 13 tracks, and 13 audio recordings.

Successful Speaking Secrets is available as a home study, self-help course, for individual use.  The material can also be licensed as part of an in-house training course for larger organisations, including a 'train-the-trainers' skills transfer workshop.  Contact us directly if you are interested in using the material in this way.

Are there really secrets to public speaking? IMHO, public speaking is a matter of practice, practice and more practice. Anyway, your successful speaking secrets link above it not working

Chris,

Thanks for your comment and thanks too for pointing out the broken link - which I have now fixed.

As regards the "secrets" to public speaking - there are certainly techniques that can be taught. I see many clients who have adopted the practice, practice, practice approach over many years, and many are doing no more than reinforcing bad habits.

The analogy I refer to in Successful Speaking Secrets is that of playing golf. I don't play the game, but let's suppose I wanted to learn. What would be the chance of me finding my true form by letting me loose on a golf course with some golf clubs and a few balls? Almost zero. Far better surely to take some lessons and practice between times that which I had been taught during the formal lessons themselves.

The same goes for all activities requiring physical and mental coordination; dancing, singing, sailing, skiing, etc.

Because we all use our voices to talk from an early age, many people develop the impression that (public) speaking is "the same thing", simply because it uses the voice. This is not true in my view - any more than singing is the same as talking.

We can all talk. Few of us can speak.

I agree with you wholeheartedly that practice is a huge part of the development programme - but you have to be practising the right thing.
