When it comes to people skills, communication training courses are nearly always at the top of the list. Communications skills are vital in all walks of life - both personal and professional - however, it's communication skills at work training that seems to attract most attention.

I recall a quote from one of my favourite actors, Richard Attenborough (now Lord Attenborough), "There are only two important things in life. Your education and your ability to communicate it."

I wonder how many people really believe this and act on it? For all the focus that there appears to be on communication skills, I still find myself sitting through dreadful presentations and after dinner speeches. One can forgive poor performances from people starting out in life, but I find myself taking a much firmer line with people of noted skill and experience. Educated they may well be, but their ability to communicate their message is sadly lagging behind their supposed professional skill.

It is time these people updated their interpersonal & communication skills, (before I start naming names...).
